West Orange climbs the First Watchung ridge, and the South Mountain Reservation sits right against a lot of its housing. That boundary is where a good share of the pests come from. Mice live in the leaf litter and stone walls all summer and move into the nearest heated structure when the nights turn. Yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets nest in the wooded edge and in the soffits of houses that back onto it. Wolf spiders and funnel weavers come in from the same ground.
The housing is a mix of older homes and hillside construction, and both give subterranean termites what they need: soil contact, moisture, and a foundation with cracks or degraded mortar. New Jersey sits in heavy termite pressure, and a sloped lot that drains toward the house makes it worse. Carpenter ants take the wood a failed gutter or a roof valley has softened.
